Verified National Trust - Scotney Castle

England, United Kingdom

Scotney Castle, managed by the National Trust in Kent, England, features a 14th-century moated Old Castle ruins dramatically set on an island in a small lake within a picturesque wooded valley along the River Bewl.

The site dates back to records from 1137, with the castle built around 1378 by Roger de Ashburnham as a fortified manor, later owned by the Darrell family for over 350 years before Edward Hussey purchased it in 1778.

In the 1830s, Edward Hussey III commissioned architect Anthony Salvin to construct the New Castle, a Tudor Revival mansion atop the hill, while intentionally transforming the damp Old Castle into a romantic ruin as the garden's centerpiece, surrounded by rhododendrons, azaleas, and seasonal blooms. The 780-acre estate includes waymarked walks, a quarry garden with a dinosaur footprint, and rare flora and fauna in a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with the house opening to visitors in 2007 after bequest to the National Trust in 1970.
