Nellenburg
Stockach, Germany, Germany
Nellenburg in Stockach is a medieval hilltop castle ruin situated about 613 meters above sea level on a spur west of the town of Stockach in the Konstanz district of Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The fortress was first built in the 11th century and became the seat of the Counts of Nellenburg, after whom the wider surrounding county was named; that territory later passed to Austria and eventually to Baden after the Napoleonic Wars.
Today the Nellenburg appears as a heavily ruined, largely overgrown Burgstall with only scattered fragments of walls and the layout of the outer bailey still visible, occupying a strategically elevated position above the town and the surrounding valley, and it can be reached by footpaths as a quiet, historic site rather than a fully restored castle complex.
