Verified Nemours Estate

Delaware, United States

The Nemours Estate in Wilmington, Delaware, is a grand 200-acre country estate built between 1909 and 1910 by Alfred I. du Pont as a gift for his second wife, Alicia.

The estate features a 47,000-square-foot French neoclassical mansion designed by Carrère and Hastings in the Louis XVI style, inspired by the Petit Trianon at Versailles. The mansion has 105 rooms, with 77 open for tours, showcasing rare 18th-century French furniture, artworks, tapestries, and antiques including clocks once owned by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

The formal gardens are the largest and most developed French formal gardens in North America, featuring fountains, a one-acre reflecting pool, a maze garden, the Boxwood Garden, and the Colonnade memorial. The estate underwent a $39 million renovation from 2005 to 2008 that restored the house, gardens, and grounds.

Today, the estate is a museum open to the public for tours of the mansion, chauffeur's garage with vintage cars, and extensive gardens, blending historical grandeur with natural beauty and cultural heritage.
