Verified Ness Botanic Gardens

Neston, United Kingdom, United Kingdom

Ness Botanic Gardens, often shortened to Ness Gardens, is a large botanic garden of about 64 acres situated on the Wirral Peninsula near the town of Neston in Cheshire, overlooking the River Dee and the coast of North Wales.

Founded in 1898 by the Liverpool cotton merchant Arthur Kilpin Bulley as a plant‑collector’s garden, it became officially Liverpool University Botanic Garden when his daughter Lois Bulley gave it to the University of Liverpool in 1948, with the condition that it remain open to the public.

The gardens are noted for rich plant collections including rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, sorbus (mountain ash), and bulbs such as snowdrops, all arranged in a mix of formal and naturalistic settings across changing seasons.

Today the gardens are still managed by the University of Liverpool, host a visitor centre and café, and serve as both a scientific botanic garden and a popular day‑out destination with views, events, and family‑friendly trails.
