Neuburg Castle

Neuburg an der Donau, Germany, Germany

---

Neuburg Castle (Schloss Neuburg) is a landmark palace overlooking the Danube in Neuburg an der Donau, Bavaria.

Originally built as a medieval fortress and acquired by the Wittelsbach dynasty in 1247, it was transformed from 1527 onward into one of Germany’s most important Renaissance residences by Count Palatine Ottheinrich. The castle is especially famous for its richly decorated courtyard, Renaissance architecture, and historic court chapel, which is considered one of the earliest purpose-built Protestant church interiors in the world.

Later additions, including a Baroque east wing with distinctive round towers, further enhanced its grand appearance. Today, Neuburg Castle is one of the city's main cultural attractions. It houses museums and art collections, including Flemish Baroque paintings, while its hilltop setting offers impressive views over the Danube and the historic town below.
