Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee
Chiemsee, Germany, Germany
Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee is a grand palace built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria on Herreninsel, an island in Lake Chiemsee.
Constructed between 1878 and 1886, it was designed as a tribute to the Palace of Versailles and the French King Louis XIV, whom Ludwig greatly admired. The palace is renowned for its lavish Neo-Baroque architecture and opulent interiors, including the magnificent Hall of Mirrors, the State Staircase, and the richly decorated State Bedroom.
Although intended to be even larger, the project remained unfinished when Ludwig II died in 1886. Today, Herrenchiemsee is one of Bavaria’s most famous attractions and is open to visitors as a museum. Set amid formal gardens inspired by Versailles, the palace showcases the artistic vision of Ludwig II and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 2025.
