Neues Schloss
Simmern, Germany, Germany
Neues Schloss in Simmern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a neoclassical three-winged palace built from 1708 to 1713 on the site of a medieval castle expanded by Duke Friedrich I in the late 15th century but destroyed during the 1689 War of the Palatine Succession.
Originally serving as the Palatine Oberamtmann's residence with surrounding castle ponds, Napoleon gifted it to the town in 1802, after which it functioned as a court, school, garrison, prison, and apartments. Today, it houses the Hunsrück Museum with local history exhibits and artist Friedrich Karl Ströher's art collection, a library, event hall, wedding room, and tourist information office.
