New Bishop's Residence

Passau, Germany, Germany

---

The New Bishop’s Residence (Neue Bischöfliche Residenz) is a grand Baroque palace in the historic center of Passau, built between 1712 and 1730 as the official residence of the Prince-Bishops of Passau.

Designed in the Viennese late Baroque style, it became the political and ceremonial center of the powerful ecclesiastical state that once ruled the region. The building is known for its elegant façade, ornate portals, and magnificent Rococo staircase, which features elaborate stucco decoration, sculpted cherubs, and a ceiling fresco depicting the gods of Olympus protecting Passau.

Today, the residence forms part of the larger former princely-bishop’s complex in Passau. It houses the Bishop’s Ordinariate and provides access to the Cathedral Treasury and Diocesan Museum, making it both an important historic landmark and a cultural attraction near St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
