The Edwardian-style glass structure fell into neglect by the 1970s but was saved by local volunteers and has since been restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is one of the top historical attractions in Oak Park, containing over 3,000 plants within its 8,000 square feet of growing areas, including seasonal flower shows and themed gardens like the Rubinstein Memorial Garden.

The Conservatory actively practices sustainability with solar panels, rainwater collection, and beehives and grows about 20,000 bedding plants each year to beautify local parks. It offers educational programs, gardening demonstrations, and community events and is open to the public with free admission, welcoming over 50,000 visitors annually.
