Oberes Schloß
Mitwitz, Germany, Germany
Oberes Schloss in Mitwitz, Germany, is a historic castle originally built in the late Middle Ages, likely between the 14th and 15th centuries, as indicated by its characteristic cross-ribbed vaults.
It is situated on the Jakobsberg hill, about 80 meters above the nearby Unteres Schloss (Lower Castle), which lies in the valley. During the Thirty Years' War (1631-1634), the castle was heavily damaged by fires amid conflicts between Catholic Kronach and Protestant Mitwitz, leaving only parts of the cellar and ground floor intact. In 1713, Johann Ludwig von Würtzburg rebuilt the castle in Baroque style, giving it the appearance it retains today.
The building features a three-story structure with a seven-axis facade and a prominent balcony supported by columns. It remained in the hands of the Würtzburg family until the early 20th century and later came into the possession of the von Cramer-Klett family, who still own it. The castle has been partly inhabited and was last lived in during summer months by family members until 1992.
It is surrounded by a large park and close to the Jakobskirche church. The site remains private and is not open to public visits.
