Obermurach Castle

Obermurach Castle, also known as Burg Murach or Haus Murach, is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located near Oberviechtach in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate region.

Built in the late 11th or early 12th century and first mentioned in 1110, it was established by the Counts of Sulzbach to protect trade routes leading toward Bohemia and to defend nearby settlements. Over the centuries, the castle passed from the Sulzbach family to the Counts of Ortenburg and later to the Wittelsbach rulers.

It played an important defensive role along the Bavarian-Bohemian frontier and successfully withstood attacks during the Hussite Wars. After losing its administrative importance in the early 19th century, the castle gradually fell into ruin. Today, Obermurach Castle is one of the most impressive castle ruins in the region.
