Opole is one of Poland's oldest cities, located in the southwestern part of the country as the capital of Opole Voivodeship, situated on the Oder River amid the historic Upper Silesia region.

Its origins trace back to the 8th century as a Slavic Opolanie tribe settlement and early stronghold, becoming the capital of an independent duchy in 1172 under Polish Piast rule, with town rights granted around 1217 by Duke Casimir I, spurring growth through trade routes, a brick castle, city walls, and churches built under dukes like Bolko I.

Thriving as a medieval commerce hub, it later passed to Bohemia in 1327, Habsburgs in the 16th century, Prussia in 1742, and returned to Poland after 1945, evolving with 19th-century railways, industry, and modern fame as the "City of Song" hosting Poland's National Festival since the 1960s.
