Ostheim Fortress Church (Kirchenburg Ostheim) is a remarkable fortified church complex located in Ostheim vor der Rhön in Bavaria, Germany. Built mainly between 1400 and 1450, it was designed not only as a place of worship but also as a refuge for local residents during times of conflict. The complex surrounds the Church of St. Michael with a rare double ring of defensive walls, towers, bastions, and storage buildings, making it one of the largest and best-preserved fortified churches in Germany. The present Protestant church was constructed in the Renaissance style between 1615 and 1619 on the site of an older church. Inside the fortifications are dozens of vaulted cellars and lofts that once allowed townspeople to store food and valuables and seek protection during invasions and wars. Today, the fortress church is a major historical landmark and cultural attraction, valued for its unique architecture and exceptional state of preservation.
