Palace in Chocianowiec
Chocianowiec, Poland, Poland
Palace in Chocianowiec, near Chocianów in Lower Silesia, Poland, evolved from a 13th-century Gothic castle built around 1297 by Duke Bolko I Surowy of Świdnica-Jawor as a defensive stronghold and seat for Legnica dukes, later sold in 1444 as a fief to the German von Dornheim family. It passed through noble lineages including Nostitz, Stosch, and Dohn before Melchior Gotlob von Dohn commissioned its 1728-1732 Baroque reconstruction into a residence by architect Marcin Frantz from Rewla, retaining only a quadrilateral tower from the medieval era while adding a park, two side buildings (oficyny), and stajnie for horses. Damaged during World War II and left in ruins since around 1945, the privately owned site preserves fortification remnants in its foundations amid overgrown grounds near Chojnowa road, with nearby features like a pavilion and modern sculptures.
