Palais Lichtenau
Potsdam, Germany, Germany
Palais Lichtenau is an elegant early Neoclassical palace in Potsdam, built between 1796 and 1797 during the reign of King Frederick William II of Prussia.
Located near the Neuer Garten and Marmorpalais, it was designed as a prestigious residence and forms part of the architectural transition from the ornate styles of the 18th century to the cleaner lines of Classicism. The palace is traditionally associated with Wilhelmine von Lichtenau, the king’s close companion and later Countess of Lichtenau, although historians now question whether she ever lived there for any significant period.
Its impressive façade, grand halls, and richly decorated interiors reflect the artistic tastes of the Prussian court around 1800. Over the centuries, the building passed through various owners and uses before being carefully restored. Today, Palais Lichtenau is valued as an important architectural landmark and cultural venue, admired for its historic interiors and its connection to Potsdam’s royal heritage.
