Palmtree Garden, also known as Palmentuin, is a historic and tranquil urban park located in the heart of Paramaribo, Suriname, behind the Presidential Palace. Established in 1685 by Dutch Governor Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck, it features tall royal palm trees that provide ample shade and a lush tropical atmosphere.

The garden is home to over 100 palm species, tropical birds, and even capuchin monkeys, making it a refreshing natural oasis within the city. It offers walking paths, traditional wooden cabanas selling local crafts, and playground areas, attracting both locals and tourists seeking relaxation and nature. The park is free to enter and open daily from early morning to evening. Besides its natural charm, Palmtree Garden is culturally significant, hosting statues honoring Surinamese figures and serving as a venue for community events.

Despite occasional maintenance challenges noted by visitors, it remains a peaceful and iconic green space reflecting Suriname’s botanical heritage and colonial history.
