Pappenheim Castle is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Pappenheim and the Altmühl Valley in Bavaria, Germany. Built around the 11th and 12th centuries, it was the ancestral seat of the powerful Counts of Pappenheim, who served as imperial marshals of the Holy Roman Empire. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and strengthened, but it suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years’ War and the War of the Spanish Succession. Much of the complex survives as an impressive ruin, featuring a keep, defensive walls, and historic buildings that showcase its medieval past. Today, Pappenheim Castle is one of Bavaria’s most significant medieval castle sites. Visitors come for its panoramic views, historical exhibits, nature and hunting museum, and insights into the history of the Pappenheim family and the surrounding Altmühl region.
