Parc National de Basse Casamance
Ziguinchor Region, Senegal
Parc National de Basse Casamance, located in Senegal's Ziguinchor Region near Oussouye, covers about 5,000 hectares and features diverse habitats including Guinean forests, savannah woodlands, mangroves, and wetlands. Established in 1970, it is home to a rich variety of wildlife including around 200 bird species and 50 mammal species such as African forest buffalo, leopards, monkeys, and the western red colobus.
The park plays a vital role in conserving these ecosystems and supports traditional wildlife like crocodiles and diverse birdlife including parrots and hornbills.
Due to regional conflict and concerns about land mines, the park has been closed to tourists for several years, limiting access but maintaining its status as an important biodiversity refuge. It remains a key natural sanctuary in Senegal, appreciated for its lush tropical environment and unique animal populations.
