Patarei Merekindlus, also known as Patarei Sea Fortress, is a 19th‑century coastal battery on the seafront of northern Tallinn, Estonia, originally built in 1840 by the Russian Empire to guard the sailing route to Saint Petersburg. The site later served as barracks and, from 1919 until 2004, as a prison under both Estonian and Soviet rule, becoming one of the country’s most notorious detention centers, especially during the communist era. Today the massive stone‑walled complex is known for its dark history, with a former prison museum in the eastern wing that traces the experiences of inmates under Soviet and Nazi occupation, while the wider area is being transformed into a mixed‑use cultural and office quarter by the sea. Located at Kalaranna 28–32, Patarei Merekindlus remains a striking and somber landmark whose architecture and stories offer a vivid window into Estonia’s military, colonial, and Cold‑War past.
