Pelourinho, the historic heart of Salvador in Bahia, is a kaleidoscope of color, culture, and colonial charm. Perched in the Cidade Alta (Upper City) overlooking the Bay of All Saints, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famed for its cobblestone streets, pastel-hued buildings, and baroque churches that echo Brazil’s Portuguese past.

The name “Pelourinho” means “pillory” in Portuguese, referencing the public whipping post that once stood in its central square — a sobering reminder of the area’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.

But today, the neighborhood has transformed into a vibrant celebration of Afro-Brazilian heritage, where music, dance, and art pulse through the streets. Capoeira circles, drumming ensembles, and spontaneous samba performances are part of daily life here.
