People’s Park in Shanghai is a vibrant green oasis nestled in the heart of the city’s bustling Huangpu District. Once the site of the Shanghai Race Club’s horse track during colonial times, the park was transformed in 1952 into a public space that now blends history, culture, and everyday life in fascinating ways. It’s famous for more than just its serene gardens and lotus ponds.

On weekends, the park becomes a stage for two unique social phenomena: the English Corner, where locals gather to practice English with visitors, and the Marriage Market, where parents post handwritten profiles of their adult children in hopes of finding them a spouse. These gatherings offer a rare glimpse into modern urban life and tradition coexisting side by side.

The park is also home to the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, the May Thirtieth Movement Monument, and the whimsical Barbarossa Lounge perched beside a lotus pond.
