Pflegschloss Altdorf is a historic administrative castle located in the center of Altdorf bei Nürnberg, Bavaria. It was built by the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg after the town came under Nuremberg’s control in the early 16th century and served as the seat of the local governor, or “Pfleger,” who managed the surrounding territory. The castle was constructed beginning in 1523 and rebuilt in 1558 after being destroyed during the Second Margrave War. Although designed primarily as an administrative center, it was also fortified with defensive features, giving it the appearance of a small castle. After the end of Nuremberg’s rule in 1806, the building was used for various governmental purposes, including as a court. Today, the Pflegschloss remains one of Altdorf’s most important historic landmarks, reflecting the town’s role as a regional center of administration and justice for centuries.
