Verified Pieszyce

Poland, Poland

Pieszyce is a town in southwestern Poland's Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Dzierżoniów County, situated in the valley of the Pieszycki Potok stream at the foot of the Owl Mountains (Góry Sowie), about 5 km southwest of Dzierżoniów and 50 km south of Wrocław.

First mentioned in 1258 as Peterswald (meaning "Peter's Forest"), it emerged during 13th-century German colonization as a large rural settlement with a stone manor, church, folwark, and mills under knightly ownership like Otton of Wilin.

Developing textile manufacturing from 1722 with Promnitz counts' facilities and peaking as Poland's second-largest center after Łódź by the 19th century, it hosted the 1844 weavers' uprising immortalized by Gerhart Hauptmann, lost town status post-WWII until 1962, and features a notable 16th-18th century castle-palace complex with Renaissance and Baroque elements amid historic parks and nearby hiking trails.
