Verified Pilica

Poland, Poland

Pilica is a historic town in southern Poland's Silesian Voivodeship, Zawiercie County, situated at the source of the Pilica River amid the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland's limestone hills, part of the Polish Jura landscape roughly 40 km northeast of Częstochowa and 50 km north of Kraków.

Originally part of Lesser Poland under Duke Bolesław III Wrymouth's 1138 testament, it received town rights around 1393 from Jadwiga Pilecka, evolving from an 11th-century hilltop settlement (Stara Pilica) with an early church into a market hub protected by nearby castles like Smoleń and later a 17th-century bastioned fortress by the Magnuszewskis.

Annexed to Russia after 1815, it lost urban status post-1869 January Uprising until 1994 restoration, preserving a long market square, synagogues from a once-thriving Jewish community since 1581, and ruins amid trails blending medieval heritage with natural scenery.
