Verified Põltsamaa Loss

Põltsamaa, Estonia, Estonia

Põltsamaa Loss (Põltsamaa Castle) is a historic castle complex in central Estonia that was originally founded in 1272 on the banks of the Põltsamaa River.

Over the centuries, it served as a fortress, the residence of King Magnus of Livonia, and later a grand Rococo-style palace, reflecting its long and varied history. The castle suffered significant damage from wars and fires, particularly in 1941, leaving much of the complex in ruins.

Preservation and restoration efforts have since revived the site, turning it into one of the region’s most important cultural landmarks. Today, visitors can explore historical exhibitions, climb the seven-story tower for panoramic views, visit the unique church built into the castle fortifications, and enjoy craft workshops, museums, and local cuisine within the castle grounds.
