“Posht Kūh” (also written Poshteh‑Kuh, Posht‑e Kuh, Poshtkuh, or Posht Kooh) is not a single place but a common Persian name meaning “behind the mountain” that refers to many different villages, districts, and regions across Iran. In its most general geographic sense, Pošt‑e Kūh designates the most western part of the historical Luristan tribal area in the Zagros Mountains, a mountainous region in western Iran traditionally inhabited by Lur communities and characterized by rugged terrain, valleys, and high peaks. At the same time, there are dozens of specific places called Posht Kūh or Posht‑e Kuh, including villages in Hormozgan Province (such as Posht‑e Kuh in Bandar Abbas County and Poshtkuh‑e Abdan), Kerman Province (such as Poshtkuh in Anbarabad and Rafsanjan counties), Fars Province (where there is even a Poshtkuh District), Kohgiluyeh and Boyer‑Ahmad, Markazi, Isfahan, and other provinces, each with small populations, often a few dozen to several hundred people, and typically located in rural, mountainous settings. Because of this ambiguity, the meaning of “Posht Kūh, Iran” depends on the context: if no additional province or town is specified, it most likely refers either to the broader western Luristan region known as Pošt‑e Kūh or to one of the many small villages that share this name.
