Verified Przegorzały

Poland, Poland

Przegorzały is a historic district on the western outskirts of Kraków, Poland, in the Zwierzyniec area, situated 6.5 km from the city center at the edge of Wolski Forest overlooking the Vistula River valley between hills like Sikornik (297 m) and Pustelnik (352 m).

First documented in 1162 as Pregoral or Przegorzala—meaning "burnt place"—it originated as a medieval village owned by Norbertine Sisters, divided into noble and ecclesiastical parts, with prehistoric roots tracing to a 30,000-year-old Aurignacian campsite discovered in the 1930s.

Incorporated into Kraków by Nazis in 1941 as Wartenberg, it features a prominent "castle" (Schloss Wartenberg) built during WWII as a residence for the General Government district head and later a sanatorium, now a venue amid nature reserves retaining its semi-rural charm.
