Verified Pura Besakih

Karangasem, Bali, Indonesia

Pura Besakih, often called the “Mother Temple of Bali,” is the island’s most sacred and grandest Hindu temple complex. Perched nearly 1,000 meters up the slopes of Mount Agung in Karangasem, East Bali, it’s a spiritual and architectural marvel that has evolved over more than a thousand years into a sprawling complex of 23 interrelated temples.

The centerpiece is Pura Penataran Agung, a multi-tiered sanctuary aligned along a single axis that symbolically leads worshippers closer to the divine. The temple’s layout reflects the Balinese concept of Tri Hita Karana—the harmony between humans, nature, and the gods. Its stepped terraces, stone gateways, and towering meru shrines create a majestic silhouette against the mountain backdrop.

Pura Besakih is not just a place of worship—it’s a living cultural hub. It hosts over 70 annual ceremonies based on the 210-day Balinese calendar, culminating in the rare and powerful Ekadasa Rudra ritual, last held in 1979.

Despite being nearly destroyed by Mount Agung’s eruption in 1963, the lava flows miraculously spared the temple, reinforcing its sacred status in the eyes of the Balinese. Visitors are welcome but must wear a sarong and sash, and access to the inner sanctums is reserved for worshippers. While the site has faced challenges with over-commercialization and unauthorized fees, recent efforts have improved visitor management.
