Püspökladány-Farkasszigeti Arborétum
Püspökladány, Hungary, Hungary
Püspökladány-Farkasszigeti Arborétum, also locally called Farkassziget, is Hungary's largest arboretum, covering 407 hectares in Püspökladány's northern boundary within Hortobágy National Park.
Its planting began in 1954 as part of saltgrass research that started three decades earlier in 1924, created specifically for forestry use of clay and saline soils with forest-stepype climate and to expand forest tree species variety. The original two-hectare former farmland initially hosted 1,290 species, varieties, and forms, and over time 450 tree and shrub species survived from the original planting in a fully closed stand.
The arboretum expanded to 8 hectares in 1988, was declared a nationally significant nature protection area in 1972, and from 2019 the entire Farkassziget area received arboretum classification. The site houses the Forestry Scientific Institute's office building with a statue of Kaán Károly, the pioneer of nature conservation and Alföld tree planting, who initiated the Püspökladány Salt Experimental Station in autumn 1924.
It is open Monday–Thursday 8 AM–4 PM, Friday 8 AM–1 PM, walkable anytime, and has no entrance fee. The name Farkassziget refers to the area's history as dry land rising from marshes where meadow wolves once lived in large numbers.
