Püspökszentlászlói Arborétum
Hosszúhetény, Hungary, Hungary
Püspökszentlászlói Arborétum is a small, exquisitely beautiful nature reserve located in Püspökszentlászló, a village that forms part of Hosszúhetény at the northern foot of Zengő Hill in Baranya County, Hungary's southernmost region.
The arboretum originel beated as the park of a local bishop's summer residence, with the castle built in 1797 by Bishop Gróf Esterházy Pál László, and Bishop Hettyey Sámugan creating the arboretum at the end of the 19th century, expanding it with additional land purchases, building an irrigation system and cistern, and planting numerous plant species.
Today it houses 84 special tree and shrub species from around the world, some over several hundred years old, including the jewel of the garden's rich plant population—the Bánát peony ( Bánáti bazsarózsa), whose most important European habitat is the Zengő ridge. The arboretum is part of Duna-Dráva National Park and the Kelet-Mecsek Landscape Protection Area, classified as a strictly protected area, while the castle park itself is under monument protection.
The renovated castle opened on May 1, 2016, housing a pilgrimage house, tourist information point, exhibition on the castle's history, and a Mindszenty memorial exhibition, with guided tours available Saturdays and Sundays at 10 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM during summer (May 1–October 31), and the arboretum is open March 15–October 31 from 10 AM–6 PM with an entrance fee of 500 forint.
