Qalaat Ja‘bar (also written Qal‘at Ja’bar or Jabbar Castle) is a large medieval fortress on a hill that now forms an island in Lake Assad in Raqqa Province, Syria, about 50–55 km west of Raqqa city and overlooking the Euphrates River.

The hill was likely fortified from the 7th century, the first known castle was built by the local Numayr tribe in the 11th century, and it was later rebuilt and greatly strengthened from 1168 by Nur al‑Din Zangi as an anti‑Crusader stronghold, with an oblong stone wall about 1,210 × 560 feet, 35 bastions, a dry moat, and a mosque with a circular mud‑brick minaret that still stands.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the construction of the nearby Tabqa Dam created Lake Assad, turning the hill into an island and requiring major restoration to protect the castle from rising water; the site is now reached by a narrow causeway and is notable for being built largely of baked mud bricks and a tunnel entrance cut into the rock.

In the civil war, the castle was captured by the Islamic State in 2014 and used as a training base and observation point near their Raqqa “capital,” then recaptured by Syrian forces in 2017, and after initial damage and looting it has slowly reopened to visitors as security improved, with parts such as the mosque and minaret restored and the site again functioning as an important cultural and historical monument in northern Syria.
