Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi is an Umayyad desert palace in Syria, built around 727 CE by Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik. It lies southwest of Palmyra and was part fortress, part residence, with gardens, baths, and waterworks that helped turn the desert into a managed royal retreat. Today it is admired as an important example of early Islamic architecture and desert engineering.
