Rauheneck Castle is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located near Ebern in Bavaria, Germany. Built around 1180 on a wooded spur of the Haubeberg, it was originally associated with the noble Rauheneck family and later became an administrative stronghold of the Bishopric of Würzburg. During the Middle Ages, the castle played an important political and defensive role in the region. It was expanded and strengthened over time, particularly during periods of conflict such as the Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years’ War. After the original Rauheneck family died out, the castle remained under the control of Würzburg authorities and their appointed officials. Today, Rauheneck Castle survives as an impressive ruin within the Haßberge Nature Park. Restoration and safety work have preserved key features of the complex, allowing visitors to explore the remains and enjoy views of the surrounding landscape while learning about the area's medieval history.
