Renesse Castle
Malle, Belgium
Renesse Castle in Malle, Belgium, was originally built between 1431 and 1464 by Willem van Berchem. It was destroyed in 1542 during the wars involving Charles of Guelders and Charles V, with much of the village of Oostmalle and the castle burned down.
A new castle was constructed shortly after, incorporating the remaining tower of the original structure. The castle has a rich history, having hosted notable figures like Emperor Charles V and William of Orange, and it suffered damage during both world wars. In the 19th century, it was partially rebuilt in Flemish Neo-Renaissance style. Since 1983, it has been owned by the municipality of Malle and is currently used as a museum and for cultural events, surrounded by a large park and nature reserve open to the public.
The castle combines medieval heritage with later architectural styles and serves as a significant cultural landmark in the region.
