Karreveld Castle
Belgium, Belgium
Karreveld Castle is a historic castle-farm in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a municipality of Brussels, Belgium, originally owned by the Villegas family since 1780 and set within a 16-hectare estate that now features a public park with a pond and conifers.
In the early 20th century, it became a pioneering site for Belgian cinema, hosting the country's first film studio built by Alfred Machin for Pathé, where early features like La Fille de Delft and Maudite soit la guerre were produced using on-site workshops and a mini-zoo for animal actors.
Acquired by the municipality in 1930, rebuilt between 1952 and 1958 after partial urbanization, it now serves as a cultural center hosting events like the summer Festival Bruxellons! theater festival and the Blue Flamingo Jazz Festival.
