Verified Residenzschloss Urach

Bad Urach, Germany, Germany

Residenzschloss Urach is a late‐medieval palace in the center of Bad Urach in the Reutlingen district of Baden‑Württemberg, Germany, and one of the few surviving residential castles from the splendor of the Württemberg county in the 14th and 15th centuries.

It was built around 1400 as an extension of an older town castle to serve as the principal residence for the counts of Württemberg‑Urach, modeled on the Altes Schloss in Stuttgart, and later became the seat of the first duke of Württemberg, Eberhard im Bart, who was born and lived there with his Italian wife before moving the main residence to Stuttgart in 1482.

The palace combines original late‑Gothic rooms such as the Dürnitz hall with later showpieces like the Golden Hall, a richly gilded Renaissance banquet hall, and the Palm Hall, which displays the family’s claim to elevated status through a grand ancestral panel.

Today the Schloss houses historically themed rooms, a large baroque sleigh collection, and cultural events, and is managed by the state’s palaces and gardens service, though it is currently undergoing renovation and is scheduled to reopen in late July 2026.
