It has a population of around 4,300 people and serves as the administrative seat of the larger Gmina Resko, an urban‑rural commune that includes both the town and surrounding villages. Historically the town was known as Regenwalde and has roots going back to the 13th century, with medieval town rights and a Gothic church that still stand today.
The local landscape features modest historical monuments such as the classicist town hall, the ruins of an old castle, and a small hydroelectric plant, set within a quiet service and agricultural region.
