Rieneck Castle

Rieneck, Germany, Germany

Rieneck Castle is a well-preserved medieval hilltop castle overlooking the town of Rieneck in Bavaria, Germany. Built around 1150 by Ludwig I, Count of Loon and Rieneck, it was established to protect the county’s borders and control important routes through the Sinn Valley and the Spessart region. The castle is known for its massive 19-meter-high keep, called the “Thick Tower,” and for its unique Romanesque tower chapel, which is built בתוך the tower walls and is considered exceptional in Europe. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and remained an important seat of power for the Counts of Rieneck. Today, Rieneck Castle is owned by the German Christian Guide and Scout Association and serves as a youth and educational center. Visitors can explore its historic architecture, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and experience one of Bavaria’s most impressive medieval castles.
