Syria, Syria

Roman ruins in Syria are a globally significant group of ancient sites that include cities, temples, tombs, roads and public buildings dating mainly from the 1st to 4th centuries CE, reflecting Syria’s role as a vital province of the Roman Empire.

The most famous Roman site by far is Palmyra (Tadmur), an oasis city in the Syrian desert northeast of Damascus, which grew into a wealthy trading hub and maintained a distinctive blend of Roman, Greek and local Semitic culture; its monumental ruins include the Great Colonnaded Street, the Temple of Bel, tetrapylons, extensive grave towers and necropoleis, and other temples and public structures.

Damascus also contains important Roman remains within its Old City, such as the Roman street grid, the Hadrianic Arch, parts of the Roman Agora, and evidence of the ancient city walls and gates merged into later Islamic architecture. In southern Syria, the Dead Cities (such as Serjilla, Burjash and other villages in the limestone massif) preserve Roman and late‑Roman houses, churches, baths and tombs, showing daily life and rural settlement patterns in the Roman provinces.

Other notable Roman‑period sites include Bosra ash‑Sham in the south, with a large Roman theatre and remains of a Roman road and arches, and a number of smaller towns and fortifications along trade routes. Many of these sites were heavily damaged during the Syrian civil war and by deliberate destruction (especially at Palmyra), and since late 2024, after the fall of the Assad regime, experts and archaeologists have been returning to assess damage, begin documentation and plan restoration as a step toward reviving tourism and supporting the country’s economy.
