Roman Theater, Bosra Archaeological Site
Bosra, Daraa Governorate, Syria
The Roman Theater at Bosra, part of the UNESCO-listed Bosra Archaeological Site in Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, stands as one of the best-preserved ancient Roman theaters worldwide, built in the 2nd century AD likely during Emperor Trajan's reign from black basalt stone.
Measuring 102 meters across with seating for up to 17,000 spectators in a city that once held 80,000 people, it features a towering three-story stage backed by columns, perfect acoustics, and a semi-circular design divided into auditorium, stage, and tiered seats, originally used for Greek and Roman dramas outside the city walls.
Later enclosed by an Ayyubid fortress in the medieval era with 11 towers for defense along the Damascus road, it served as a citadel until restorations from 1947-1970 cleared sand and debris, preserving its structure amid Syria's civil war impacts, though access remains limited.
