Rosenberg Fortress

Kronach, Germany, Germany

---

Rosenberg Fortress (Festung Rosenberg) is a massive hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Kronach in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

Originating as a medieval castle and expanded between the 13th and 18th centuries, it became one of the most important strongholds of the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg and is considered one of the largest and best-preserved fortresses in Bavaria. The fortress was built in a highly strategic location controlling key trade routes and famously was never captured by force despite numerous conflicts and siege attempts over the centuries.

Its architecture reflects medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque building styles, showcasing centuries of military engineering. Today, Rosenberg Fortress is one of Kronach’s most important landmarks and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore its impressive walls, towers, underground passages, and the Franconian Gallery, which displays medieval and Renaissance artworks, including works associated with Kronach-born artist Lucas Cranach the Elder.
