Rothenberg Fortress is a large historic fortress located on the 588-meter-high Rothenberg hill near Schnaittach in Bavaria, Germany. Its origins date back to medieval times, but the impressive fortress seen today was largely built between 1729 and 1750 as a Rococo-style military stronghold designed to protect Bavaria’s border and control the surrounding region. The site stands on the remains of earlier castles that were successively expanded, destroyed, and rebuilt over the centuries. It was once an important defensive position for Emperor Charles IV and later for Bavaria, featuring powerful star-shaped fortifications, barracks, and extensive underground structures. After losing its military importance in the 19th century, the fortress was abandoned and gradually became a ruin. Today, Rothenberg Fortress is one of the most significant historic monuments in the region, attracting visitors with its impressive remains, panoramic views, and fascinating insight into both medieval and early modern military history.
