Rügland Castle
Rügland, Germany, Germany
Rügland Castle is one of the few surviving moated castles in Middle Franconia, Bavaria. Its origins lie in a medieval water fortress owned by the Lords of Vestenberg, but the estate took its present form after it was acquired by the Crailsheim family in 1584, who still own it today. The castle complex combines buildings from different periods, including the “Old Castle” from 1611 and the larger “New Castle,” built between 1714 and 1717 from plans by architect Karl Friedrich von Zocha. Surrounded by water and historic grounds, it developed from a fortified residence into an elegant noble estate. Today, Rügland Castle is an important cultural landmark that showcases centuries of Franconian aristocratic history. Parts of the castle house a family museum dedicated to the Crailsheim family, while the picturesque moated setting makes it one of the most distinctive historic sites in the region.
