Ruine Alt-Urach
Lenzkirch, Germany, Germany
Ruine Alt-Urach is the medieval castle ruin located in Lenzkirch in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in the Black Forest region, situated on a mountain spur directly at the orderly entrance from Titisee-Neustadt on the right-hand side of the Bundesstraße 315 above the Haslach valley.
The castle was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Urach and first mentioned in a 1316 document as "burg ze Úra". During the 14th and 15th centuries it belonged to the Lords of Blumegg and served as the center of the Lordship of Lenzkirch, then in 1491 was sold to the Counts of Fürstenberg, though it was already described at that time as a Burgstall meaning uninhabitable.
The original castle featured a rectangular residential tower and wall ring with a house extension added around 1404. Since 1972 the ruin has been owned by the municipality of Lenzkirch and is maintained by the Lenzkirch Black Forest Association, which restored the masonry in 1995–96. Today the picturesque high ruin stands beside the road perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Haslach valley, offering visitors a glimpse into medieval Black Forest history.
