Ruine der Burg Ehrenfels

Beratzhausen, Germany, Germany

---

Ruine der Burg Ehrenfels is a medieval castle ruin located on a hill above the Schwarze Laber Valley near Beratzhausen in Bavaria, Germany.

The castle was first documented in 1256 and served as the ancestral seat of the noble Ehrenfels family before later passing to the Stauffer family. Today, visitors can explore the remains of defensive walls, moats, towers, gate structures, and foundations that illustrate the castle’s evolution from an early medieval stronghold into a more sophisticated late medieval fortress.

Its elevated position offers impressive views over the surrounding countryside and highlights the strategic importance the site once held. The castle suffered damage during regional conflicts, declined after losing its administrative role, and eventually fell into ruin. Preservation efforts have been ongoing for decades, helping maintain the site as a popular historical landmark and destination for hikers and history enthusiasts in the Upper Palatinate region.
