Ruine Hohenburg bei Thalheim
Bissingen, Germany, Germany
Ruine Hohenburg bei Thalheim is the remains of a medieval hilltop castle located between the villages of Fronhofen and Thalheim, in the municipality of Bissingen in Bavaria, Germany. The castle was built before 1140 and was originally the seat of the noble Hohenburg family, who played an important role in the region during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, ownership passed to several noble families and the Counts of Oettingen. After being sold in the 16th century, the castle was gradually abandoned because its owners preferred more comfortable residences elsewhere. By the end of the 16th century, it had already fallen into ruin. Today, only a few remnants survive, including parts of walls, a former gate tower, earthworks, and the remains of the keep. Situated on a wooded hill above the Kessel Valley, the ruins offer visitors a glimpse into the area’s medieval past and are a quiet destination for history enthusiasts and hikers.
