Ruine Hohenburg

Lenggries, Germany, Germany

---

Ruine Hohenburg is the remains of a medieval hilltop castle located near Lenggries in Bavaria, Germany.

First documented around 1100, the castle stood on a rocky height overlooking the Isar Valley and served for centuries as the most important seat of power in the Isarwinkel region. The settlement that later became the town of Lenggries developed at the foot of the castle. Over the centuries, Hohenburg passed through several noble families and was gradually transformed from a defensive fortress into a more comfortable aristocratic residence.

During the War of the Spanish Succession, it was occupied by Austrian troops and was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1707. Today, only parts of the castle remain, including sections of walls, earthworks, a tower fragment, and a well shaft. The wooded ruin is a popular historical site and offers visitors a glimpse into the medieval history of the Lenggries area.
