Ruine Lauterburg
Essingen, Germany, Germany
Ruine Lauterburg is the remains of a medieval hilltop castle located in the village of Lauterburg, part of Essingen in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was likely built in the early 12th century and was associated over the centuries with important noble families, including the Hohenstaufen, the Counts of Oettingen, and the von Woellwarth family. The fortress was expanded during the Middle Ages and later transformed into a Renaissance-style castle in 1594. However, a major fire in 1732 destroyed much of the complex, leaving it as the impressive ruin seen today.
The nearby castle church, built in 1607, survived and continues to serve as the village church. Today, visitors can still see substantial sections of the outer walls, gate structures, and other remnants of the castle. Perched on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside, Ruine Lauterburg is an important historical landmark that reflects centuries of regional history and architecture.
