Ruine Stöffeln
Reutlingen, Germany, Germany
Ruine Stöffeln is the remains of a large medieval Höhenburg located on the 736‑meter‑high Stöffelberg in the Reutlingen district of Gönningen in Baden‑Württemberg, Germany.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the local Edelfreien of Stöffeln and developed into one of the biggest feudal fortresses in the region, with a complex layout of Vorderburg, Vorburg, and Hinterburg separated by deep rock‑cut moats. After being sold to the counts of Württemberg around 1300, the fortress was destroyed in the late 14th century during conflicts and gradually fell into ruin, with only low wall and foundation fragments, ditches, and earthworks still visible.
Today the site is freely accessible via marked footpaths from Gönningen and functions mainly as a wooded, atmospheric historical landmark for hikers and history‑oriented visitors rather than as a reconstructed castle.
