Ruins of the knight's castle
Kamienna Góra, Poland, Poland
Ruins of the knight's castle in Kamienna Góra, southwestern Poland, refer to the remnants of Grodztwo Castle, a Renaissance residence built around 1565-1588 by Hans Schaff primarily on marshy terrain north of the town along the Bóbr River. Replacing an earlier medieval fortress from before 1286—destroyed during the 1426 Hussite Wars—this three-winged structure featured a tower, defensive walls, partial moat, rich portal decorations, and a unique communication gallery, later rebuilt in 1872 by Count Udo zu Stolberg-Wernigerode with added attic and blendes. Owned by noble families like Schaffgotsch, von Schindel, von Dyhrn, and von Promnitz until 1945, it survived World War II but was gutted by a 1964 fire while used by a state farm, leaving today only cellar vaults, partial walls, tower base, and park fragments as a protected historic ruin.
